Most of the lessons we learn from the Holy Spirit are discovered in the field as we actively serve. If you have walked with the Spirit for any length of time, you may have noticed that although He sometimes reveals what is ahead, more often He teaches us as we go. The journey itself becomes the classroom.
One lesson I have learned repeatedly is the importance of submitting to the grace that people are drawing from.
As someone who serves in an itinerant ministry role, I often arrive with a sense of what God desires to release to a particular region or gathering. Yet on several occasions, I have discovered that the grace or office the people are expecting is the very channel God chooses to use for breakthrough and transformation. If people are expecting a teacher, the teaching anointing tends to flow with unusual clarity and effectiveness. If they receive me as a prophet, prophetic grace abounds, and many are deeply impacted.
These experiences have taught me that while preparation remains important, flexibility is equally essential. We can prepare diligently, but we must also remain sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s direction in the moment. Often, what God chooses to do exceeds our plans and unfolds differently than we anticipated.
Flexibility with the Holy Spirit creates room for Him to move beyond our expectations. It allows us to partner with what He is already doing rather than trying to force what we think should happen. The greatest fruit often comes when we surrender our agenda and flow with His.
Over time, I have learned that ministry is not about controlling the current but discerning it. The Holy Spirit is like a river—always moving, always leading, always accomplishing the Father’s purposes. Our responsibility is not to direct the river but to recognize where it is flowing and remain in step with it.
I have learned to follow and stay with the River.
